Research and analysis highlights
The persistent low interest rate environment in the Netherlands in 2005 discouraged
consumers from investing in insurance policies offering guaranteed interest rates.
This contributed to continued stagnation (in terms of growth in premium income) in
the life insurance sector.

The Act on the Adjustment of Tax Concessions for Early Retirement and Pre-Pension
Schemes and the Introduction of the Life Course Savings Scheme (\'Levensloopregeling\'
(Life Cycle Plan)), effective January 1st 2006, removed tax concessions on early
retirement and pre-pension schemes but introduced concessions for savings via the
new scheme.

The Financial Supervision Act (Wet op het financieel toezicht (Wft)), went into
effect on January 1st 2007. The Act replaced and harmonized eight previously
existing supervision acts. The consolidation was intended to clarify legislation for
the financial services sector and make it more market-oriented.
